Doctor Teilani’s quarters

Crouched back on her heels, Teilani could feel the cold seeping into her bones thru the skin on her bare feet. She remained still, her arms wrapped around her knees, eyes closed. The wind whipped past her, dragging her hair behind her in a long sable sweep. It caught in the shell of her ears, ringing, forcing her to twitch every so often.

Teilani tried desperately to remain calm, humming some nameless tune over and over in her mind. Don't think, don't look, don't see, don't know....her mantra...it became her world until something brushed against her foot causing the fear to race thru her system like lightening. "No," she whispered, "no."

She heard the sounds despite the winds howling and cringed. They....it.... was coming. They were here. Run, her mind told her....run. Her body remained frozen in the crouch, unable to move. She swallowed, panic rising until she couldn't stand it....her mantra gone on the winds.

As she opened her eyes, the first thing she glimpsed were the bloodied fingers that had fallen across her toes. Her gasp of breath brought her head up and the body the fingers belonged to appeared in front of her. Eviscerated, entrails spread over the next body, she vomited. Wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, she forced herself to look further.

Another body and another...the dim light of the darkened sky...smoke,broken equipment.. In the hallways, as far as she could see, only bodies....dead. She remained in the only square foot that was not occupied by someone dead. Some mangled remnant of humanity. The only square foot not drenched in blood and gore.

Knuckles to her lips, she murmured apologies as she put her toes forward, inwardly shrinking away from the task ahead of her. The softness and warmth of the nearest body against her foot made her vomit once more. Nothing but bile, her stomach empty.

One step forward and the scream that ripped from her.... HELP ME, HELP ME PLEASE!!!

What Teilani did not know was that her unconscious mind had reached out to every empath on board...

Charles was sleeping when he heard the telepathic cry of Teilani so he decided to answer with the only thing he thought will calm him "Fear is my enemy I would let it pass throug me and over me and after it does nothing shall remain just me", remember Teilani remember he said telepathicly

The ripping scream had woken Teilani herself.

==Counselor’s quarters==

Zoei jolted awake. For the fifth time tonight, someone else’s subconscious intruded into her dreams. The nightmares of the survivors of the Kittyhawk seemed to be intensifying. It was time to begin the group sessions. Hopefully, the crew would be receptive and be able to begin working through the issues surrounding the arrival on board the Zion.

“Computer,” Zoei sleepily called. “Computer, message for Counselor Zoei’s calendar. Please add contact Doctor Teilani for 0800. Notation: Discuss nightmares and ways to cope. Computer, send message.”

Zoei laid back down. Since the images from the doctor were fading, she was going to attempt to get a little more rest before duty called.

==Teilani’s quarters==

"A nightmare, ....a nightmare." Teilani closed her eyes and swallowed at the images that re-inserted themselves into her memory. She could feel the bile rise and barely made it to the bath.

As she was trying to her self steady again, she felt a slight shiver go through the ship. Hm she thought there seems to be something wrong with the engines. Perhaps we need an oil check.

As she was going back to bed she tossed and turned but could not get back to sleep. This is ridiculous she said out loud, Well lets see if there is someone at the lounge I could do with a light snack.

She put on her uniform and with a last look in the mirror, it looked like she was hit by a train, Teilani went out the door. Taking the turbolift to the lounge she saw a couple of new faces - ones he hadn't yet met since her arrival less than a few days ago.

==Lounge==

It did not take long before she reached Minanda’s. There was hardly anyone there besides the proprietor of Miranda's Hello, I do not believe we have met yet, Teilani said to Miranda whiles sticking out her hand.

"Hello doctor." Minada began. She could tell that the doctor was stressed. "I manage the ship's lounge. I thought I would take a little break. Care to join me?”

I love to, I have not been able to sleep so I thought it was a good idea to get myself familiarized with the ship and its crew." Teilani responded.

“Can I get you anything?” asked Miranda.

“I would love a bowl of hot chicken noodle soup and a glass of water." She replied.

“You have a seat and I will get that for you.” Said Miranda as she walked over to the replicator. Moments later Miranda returned with a large bowl soup and a glass of water for the doctor. She also had a galss for her self. After serving Teilani’s food Miranda sat down .

"Sorry if I was rambling on about my nightmares, tell me, how did you get here. I am born on Mars, and you?"

"I am El-Aurian.” She replied, looking at the Ensign. "You look a little stressed."

Teilani nodded, “True, ever since I have been rescued from the Kittyhawk I have these awful nightmares. It is as if I have forgotten something. I see images of dead people etc” Teilani spent a few minutes telling Miranda about her dreams. She paused, “Look Miranda, sorry that I am troubling you with this but I needed to get this out of the open.”

“It is no trouble at all. As most people know listening is one of the things El-Aurian’s do best.” Replied Miranda. “Tell me, have you spoken to anyone about these dreams that you have been having?”

I did speak to Lieutenant Atwood about it, and he told me to make an appointment with the ships counselor.

I had the opportunity to meet the ships counselor. She struck me as a rather insightful youg woman.” Said Miranda.

I know I have already met but I am afraid that she just considers me as a nut case. Teilani gniffeld.

“I doubt that.” Said Miranda, “That is not how counselors usually work.” She paused, “How are you settling in to your new job on this ship?”

“You know it is amazing there is so much to do and this is a big ship but yet I feel so alone. I tried to bury myself in my work but that does not seem to work. This is getting even worse when a certain member of the medical staff give you the feeling that you are unwanted. She is probably afraid that I will take over her patient, and this is not true, we should work together as a team.”

It was the first time Teilani had outspoken her thoughts about Ensign Favor, and she was glad that she had found somebody who just listened.

“I tried to be nice to her Teilani continued but she will not allow herself to get to know me and visa versa. I even invited her to meet me her but no response.”

Miranda looked thoughtfully at the new doctor. She could see much pain in her eyes, too much pain for someone so young. “I have not had the chance to meet Ensign Favor, however, I have read her rather interesting MWR Memos. Perhaps she justneeds some time to get used to you. Sometimes time has a way of resolving problems.”

You are maybe right, I'll just leave her be. Teilani took a sip of her soup, the warmth of it felt good. We'll just see what time brings Teilani replied.

“Gee look at the time, I have been taking up so much off your time.” Teilani said regretfully as she stood up. “Lets just see if I can get some shut eye. Thanks for the soup Miranda and for a free ear.”

“Anytime doctor. I am right here.” Said Miranda.

Commander Wright sat on the bridge. The events of the day had left a sour taste in his mouth. He figured that he would be unable to rest much anyway so he took the graveyard shift.

So far the night was unevent full. There appeared to be no ships following them. They were still under cloak heading back to Qul Tuq.

"Sir, we are losing our cloak." said the ensign at the tactical station. "It just dropped."

Wright was about to call engineering to find out what the problem was when the ship shuddered violently.

"Sir we are losing speed." said the helmsman.

"Bridge to engineering. What is going on down there?"

"We are not sure yet Sir. There appears to be a major break down in the warp systems.

"Get on it. Report back as soon as you know something."

Just them Captain Hunter appeared on the bridge. "Report Number One."

"Engineering is reporting a major breakdown in the warp systems. They are investigating. We have lost speed and our cloak is down."

Hunter went over to the bridge engineering station. He didn't know what ever item on the display, but he could interpret the seriousness of the situation. The matter and anti-matter injectors had automatically shutdown. The containment field had been activated and the ship was running on emergency power.

"Helm, what is our current position?" said Hunter walking toward the center of the bridge.

"3.5 light years from Qul Tuq Sir." came the reply.

After several hours of waiting for a report, the engineer came up to the bridge. Hunter acknowledged his presence with a nod and got up from his chair.

"Lets go in my ready room" said Hunter to Wright.

As they sat down, the engineer spoke. "I'm afraid it isn't good news Sir. There's a fracture in the dylithum articulation matrix. It caused a harmonic resonation which caused some damage to the warp core and the main EPS mainfold. We can't fix it out here."

"We have no warp propulsion?" asked Hunter.

"No, we do," said the engineer, "I think we can muster warp 2 if we modify the containment field to hold things together. That is more than a bit faster than if we were towed back to Qul Tuq by some tractor beam."

Hunter sighed. "How soon til we can get underway?"

"About 48 hours to get the engines back online."

Hunter looked over at Wright. "Ok," he said.

"Very well," said Hunter looking back at the engineer. "coordinate with Ops...Riaan, to get all the help you need. I want to get back underway as soon as we can. "

"Aye Aye" said the engineer.

"That's all... dismissed." said Hunter.

Riaan got up early before beginning her shift she wanted to finalize the report for the captain.

Riaan first grabbed a toasted western sandwich and a coffee and the settled down to complete the report that was needed there was still more that needed to be done but this was the last of the two main ones, most of the other supplies could be replicated which would be another independent report for the captain.

Riaan settled down in her chair to begin her report and placed her sandwich and coffee on the table next to her.

Riaan: "Computer, begin report of Medical Supplies on Hand."

Computer: "Beginning report."

Computer: "Report saved and ended.

Riaan couldn't believe how long it took to compile a listing of medical supplies onboard that was needed to survive in space for several months would get them through.

Riaan got up and placed her empty plate and coffee cup in the replicator and made sure everything was in order in her quarters before proceeding to the bridge to report in.

A few minutes later Riaan enter the bridge and heads over to the captain.

Reporting to duty as Riaan looked at the captain.

Hunter nodded.

Excuse me sir, but here is the report for the medical supplies we have onboard at the present as she handed the Captain the PADD with the report.

Everything else can be basically replicated if need be sir. I am sorry it took time to finalize this report but it took a bit of time putting it together.

"No problem" said Hunter, "Carry on."

Yes sir replied Riaan as she watched the scanners for any ships in the area.

Sick Bay

When Silvio had left Teilani went back to her office when she noticed that she had a pending message. It was from the ships counsellor requesting her to meet around 8.00 hrs.

Teilani sighed; maybe it was time to tell the counsellor about the nightmares and how to cope with it. By the time she had finished her report on Silvio, it was nearly 8.00 hrs so Teilani headed to the counsellors office.

As she approached the door, Teilani took some deep breaths, straightened her uniform, run her hands through her hair and hit the door chime.

== Counsellors office ==

The counsellor glanced up from her seat at her desk as the door chime sounded. This morning's glass of raspberry iced tea was at her elbow, the fragrant scent of fresh replicated raspberries perfuming the air." Enter," she called.

"Good morning counsellor," whilst Teilani entered the office, "I received your message.

"Good morning, Doctor Teilani. I am sorry for the confusion about this morning. I had intended that to be a note added to my calendar to follow up with you today. It was quite inappropriate of me to have you summoned to my office this morning, without a thought to your schedule for the day, Doctor," Zoei greeted Ensign Teilani.

Its alright Teilani replied, I need to talk to you anyway. Teilani walked to the couch, do you mind if I sit down? I hope you have some time for me.

"Of course, I have time for you. Please do, have a seat there." Zoei crossed her office to the sitting area, her stride long and confident. She carried her cold glass of tea, sweat making the glass slippery. "Would you like something to drink?"

No thanks, Teilani replied, as she was sitting down she was thinking of a way to start. It was not easy for her having sessions with a counsellor, in the past Teilani had some bad experiences with counsellors. Counsellor, she said, I need you to help me analysing my nightmares, they are getting worse and I refuse them to affect my work. Oh, .. and counsellor please call me by my nickname "Red" Doctor sounds to official, Teilani said with a smile.

Zoei settled into her chair, tucking her foot underneath her as she sank in the comfort of her familiar spot. "I have noticed your dreams, Red. Last night they did appear worse than they have been. When you left after our first meeting, I worried about how your experiences would affect you as you got settled back into your routine. I am glad you chose to come back and work through them," Zoei smiled at the doctor. "Now, the best place to begin will not be with your dreams themselves, they are just a reaction to what happened on board the Kittyhawk. Why don't we start there?"

Teilani hesitated but decided to started from the beginning, Our journey was going quietly and I was really looking forward to the Medical conference at Qul Tuq , we were making good time to reach Qul

We were halfway when we were experiencing some minor problems, engine trouble, eps conduits that failed etc. nobody thought anything of it. Teilani paused for a second And then suddenly we came to a full stop. There was chaos in a matter of seconds, brilliant blue-green lights, the blur of metal raining down onto the lower decks, bodies tumbling down from above, the enraged death screams of crewmembers. Several of us ran down the corridors when we heard the distinctive sound of a transporter beams, we got boarded. Counsellor the more I think of it the more I am convinced that this was only possible if they had help from the inside.

Teilani continued. I managed to escape the boarding parties by ducking into the Jeffries tube, it all happened so fast. We managed to get to the shuttle bay but all was in vain, we ran around a curve when we ran into som e cardassians, they fired right away, without warning I managed to fall back. Teilani paused again, than I heard over the ships com that all personnel needed to go the escape pods, the last thing I saw was that the Kitty hawk exploded. I barely made it, and the rest you know, Counsellor.

"What about this do you feel is causing your dreams? Is it residual fear of what happened? Fear it could happen again? Or the trauma you went through on board the Kittyhawk? You have given me the facts of the tragedy, but nothing about how you feel about it," Zoei replied.

True Teilani replied, I am not a person who easily discusses her feelings, I do not know what it is but it is not fear maybe it is guild, I am angry I want to get even, I feel so much hate that it consumes me and yet I am sad, it is as if I have forgotten something, I SHOULD HAVE DIED ON THE KITTYHAWK WITH THE REST OF THE CREW. Teilani said with an outburst.

I should never have left them alone. Forheavenssake I am a doctor I should never have left my post. I have the feeling that I have abandon all of them. Have you ever had the feeling, counsellor that you were in a crowd and yet you were alone, well that is the way I am feeling now. But also let me tell you this counsellor, the first Cardassian or federation person I see .. well they better hide Teilani said with a voice full of hate.

"Red, there is a reason you made it off the Kittyhawk. We may not know now, or for a long time to come, but you have a purpose yet to fulfill. Guilt is common for the survivors of any tragedy. As hard as it is, to get past this, you will need to confront your feelings. It will most likely take more than once to reach a place where you are comfortable. It isn't easy. There are no quick fixes to make it go away. It will take work, which is hard when you are already stretched because of your work duties," the counselor sa id. "If it would make it easier for you, I can recommend to the Commander Wright that you be placed on half time duty. This will allow you to time to do your job and keep yourself occupied, while still allowing you to grieve the loss of your comrades and address the guilt you are feeling."

No this is not necessary, Teilani replied, if I am placed on half time than it will only force me to think about it, I know myself the best counsellor, and working my way true it is the best thing I can do, but I also know that I can not do this alone.. So I was just wondering maybe you know someone on the ship who can teach me some meditation.

I also know that when we have had the memorial service than I will be able to give it a place, not before..

Teilani took a deep breath before she continued: "It is not only the events on the Kittyhawk that bother me counsellor but it is also ensign Favor's behaviour," Teilani continued, "I have the feeling that she does not like me, and I do not know why. I tried to be nice to her, I even invited her to Miranda's for us to get acquainted." Teilani sighed she was glad that this was also out in the open.

"Have you discussed this with Ensign Favor directly? For myself, I find the easiest way to deal with conflict is to approach the person directly. If this is something that is discussed with anyone but Ensign Favor, it will surely spread like wildfire on board the ship," Zoei replied. "If you feel, once you have tried to work through this with Ensign Favor directly, that you cannot reach a resolution, please let me know. I will be happy to mediate a session for the two of you to work through your differences."

No, Teilani responded. I have not been in position where I could discuss this with her. Frankly, she has never given me a chance to do so. Honestly counsellor I am fed up with her attitude.

"Red, I understand you are in a difficult situation, but you are not the only one going through changes now. Ensign Favor is also going through some changes. Prior to your arrival, she was in charge of Sick Bay. It will take time for her to adjust to her change in status, just as it will take time for you to adjust to being on the Zion. I suggest you schedule a staff meeting. Address any concerns you have with her there. If there are problems with her work performance, you will need to follow the protocols for those specific instances. If it is personality conflicts, as I said before, I would be happy to meet with you both to work through any issues, but it would be best if you tried to work with her first.”

Teilani nodded, she knew the counsellor was right. Teilani stood up and started walking to the door, well counsellor I will not take up anymore of your time. But, Teilani hesitated I hope that we can talk some more about it?? I will try an see if I can resolve the problems with Ensign Favor, she is to valuable for sickbay and I hate loosing a good medic. Thanks for listening.

“Any time, Red,” the counselor smiled at the doctor. “My door is always open to you. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you.”

As the doctor walked through the door, Zoei turned toward her desk. The replicated ice had melted from her tea, the glass was no longer slippery. She put her glass at the replicator and strode to her office chair. The scent of gardenias wafted up around her as she sank into the comfortable chair. “Computer, dictation for Doctor Teilani Dane, session 0800 58203.02.”

=USS Zion - sickbay=

For the first time in what seemed to Silvio to be a lifetime he had managed to get a good night sleep. He felt much better and was even able to sit up. After the doctor left he slept uninterrupted and he felt much better this morning.

Silvio looked around sickbay all was quiet. Silvio ran his fingers over the stubble on his head. Remembering his bald caregiver from the night before he looked around for her, but she was not there. Settling back down on the bio bed. After a couple of hours Silvio realized he had a really big problem. He was bored! He decided that he was never going to come back here again.

Silvio had just started going through the components to a standard warp core one at a time when he noticed a delightful looking woman ether sickbay. She spoke briefly with a nurse who then pointed in his direction. Forgetting about the warp core Silvio decided that his day was about to get more interesting.

Silvio watched as she talked to the nurse. She wore only one pip on her uniform so that meant she was an ensign. He watched her as she walked over towards his biobed. Silvio tried to come up with a good line to give her but for the first time in his life he could not think of anything.

Zoei smiled inwardly as she approached Silvio's biobed. She had heard the stories that preceded him. From the look on his face, she was sure pick up lines were not coming today, at least not in the beginning. Somehow she would have to let him know this was out of bounds, but it could wait until necessary. Today was just a day to check in on Bird, see if his broken body was doing better and when he would be ready for his evaluation.

Zoei paused next to Silvio. "Hello, Lieutenant, how are you doing now that you have rejoined the land of the living?"

"Things are going much better now that you are here." He said smiling. "I am a little bored counselor. At least when I was in a coma I was dreaming about angels."

Zoei arched her eyebrow, surprised at the comment about angels. It sounded remarkably like Favor's comments about Bird. She wondered if Favor was the angel. "Boredom is a sure sign of recovery, Lieutenant. I am Ensign Zoei, the ship's counselor."

"Hello counselor, I wondered when you would be stopping by." Silvio sighed, "I suppose you think that I am going to be a basket case? Silvio paused to run his hand over the stubble on his head. "This shaved head thing itches."

"I wouldn't presume to think such a thing about you, Lieutenant," Zoei replied. This young lieutenant appeared to have a healthy does of self esteem. It should help his recovery, as long as someone didn't bash him upside the head for his brazen manner. Zoei brought herself up short at the thought. Along with presumptions on whether someone was a basket case or not, she usually showed better restraint in her thoughts on people she has just met. She had a feeling Silvio could be a handful to deal with. "Ensign Favor may be able to help you with your itchy situation. I know she has a little experience with shaved heads. The reason I stopped by was to see how you were doing and to let you know we will need to schedule an evaluation before you can return to active duty. There is no rush regarding the scheduling, but I wanted you to have that thought in the back of your mind before you pushed to return to your Engineering department."

"So that is her name? Favor huh? I have been calling her angel." Silvio smiled. While I was in that coma I had dreams about her, only she was an angel with a broken wing." Silvio smirked at the counselor and added , "Can you interpret that dream counselor?"

"Lieutenant, unfortunately for you, chance meetings in Sick Bay do not lead to dream interpretation sessions," Zoei smiled. "I would suggest Ensign Favor may be better able to discuss your dream with you." It was challenging to get an accurate reading of the lieutenant. His attitude toward her seemed to be an attempt at playfulness, but it was hard to say, so soon after he had awakened.

Silvio chuckled, this one is going to be a tough nut to crack he thought. All business. Truth be told he liked that. "I am quite puzzled by the broken wing. It means something, I just cannot figure it out." Realizing that he was thinking out loud he looked at the counselor and added, "So Counselor, how about when I am out of here we get together for dinner?"

Zoei looked at him, a little shocked. He didn't waste any time. "Miranda's would be an excellent choice for your dinner, Lieutenant. If you go early in the evening, you may be able to find Lieutenant Charles Atwood. He is currently working in Intel, but was formerly involved in engineering. He would be an excellent conversational partner for you. It is time for me to get back to my office. Please contact me when you are ready for your appointment."

Zoei turned, and without a backward glance, walked out of Sick Bay.

Silvio watched her closely as she left. It really wasn't that bad of a rejection. His heart was not in it anyway. Perhaps his encounter with the Cardassians had left some marks after all. All he could think about during his time with them was how alone he had felt. Sure he had shared the company of many beautiful women however, as his cardassian captors tore out his fingernails he distinctly remembered thinking that none of those women would care one bit after he was gone and some of them might even celebrate. He had never been so close to death before and it scared him to think he was all alone.

Commander Wright entered the the Captain's Ready Room for their morning meeting. "Good morning Captain. How are you today?"

Hunter just smiled a dull smile and noded.

"We are continuing towards Qul Tuq under impulse power. Engineering reports that repairs are moving along and should be able to give us Warp 3.5 within there earlier estimate of 48 hours, perhaps even sooner." Wright was impressed with the engineering staff. They have done well.

"That's good," said Hunter.

"Captain, what do you make of this whole situation with Jenkins? It just seems odd to me." said Wright.

"I've been giving that a lot of thought." said Hunter. He stood and paced a bit by the viewport. "He let us go." said Hunter nodding. "..I can't explain it. But, he's up to something else."

"Perhaps we should leverage out Intelligence department and try to find out more about him. I have a feeling that he is not going to go away." suggested Wright.

"I agree, I have some associates with contacts int he federation. They owe me a favor. I want to send Atwood to visit with him."

"That sounds good. It will be a good test of his abilities. I think he has been looking for this kind of opportunity. It will be rather dangerous." said Wright. "It might be a good idea for him to take a shuttle to Qul Tuq and prepare for his mission there. He will be going amidst the enemy. He needs to be prepared."

I've asked him to join us at 0920.

"One last think Captain." Wright paused, he was not sure how the Captain would respond to this next topic. "With the loss of our command crew we do have a shortage of senior officer. Have you given any thought as to what you would like to do?"

Hunter sighed heavily. "I've been very pleased with the efforts of the crew currently operating the ship. Though they are inexperienced I think they have performed their duties remarkably." Hunter tapped his steepled fingers together and nodded as he further pondered the XO's question. "Some of the more experienced crewmembers such as Atwood and Sarik, have exhibited good leadership skills. Others, like Riaan and Westfall have been a pleasent surprise. From what I can see, I am most impressed. I would like your recommendations for appointing new senior officers from the current crew manifest."

Hunter paused, "As for those the dead we have on board, we'll need find their last wishes. =off: is that right?= I suppose a memorial service would be appropriate." said Hunter.

Before Wright could respond, the door chimed, it was 0920. Hunter invited Atwood in.

Hunter gestured for Atwood to have a seat.

"Lieutenant, thanks for offering to assist in Engineering. I'm told they have the situation in hand. I think we have a far more serious problem on our hands," said Hunter with a rueful look.

"As you know, Lieutentant, there have been a series of circumstances which has brought us this far. An insideous madman has tortured and murdered our senior officers said Hunter. "I need intel on Jenkins."

"Hold on Sir", Charles took out a padd and handled it to hunter whlie he said "This is all the intell I have on Capt. Jenkins...Sir."

Hunter scanned the PADD. "Of course..." said Hunter handing the PADD to Wright.

"I Understand that.... I've known Jenkins since I was in the academy...." Said Hunter as he stood up and took a few steps towards the large view port. "I've never would believe him to go to such extreme measures."

Hunter paused a moment, and turned toward Atwood, "He's up to something more. He was out there." Said Hunter pointing away, "Watching us. Had he planned to destroy us out here?" Hunter shook his head, "Obviously not."

Hunter sat back down. "Charles," said Hunter dropping the formalities, "I need your help... your connections, to find out what is going on." Hunter looked puzzled. "What's the Cardassian's connection in all of this?"

Leaning forward with an inquisitive expression and looking Atwood in the eyes, Hunter asked, "Are you up to it?"

"Yes sir of course!", answered Charles while he said "I'll put all my resources to solve this puzzle sir"

Hunter sat back, nodding confidently. He took a sip from a cup sitting on his desk and sighed.

Hunter flipped his console around so Atwood and Wright could see the display, "After we get to Qul Tuq, take the runabout to this planet, Artus. Find this man, Rex Tull. He's a trusted friend and has contacts inside the Federation. Maybe he can help illumiate the information we need."

"I see", said Charles while he took a look at the console and took note of the Location of the planet in another padd and the name of the guy he was expected to meet there and added "Perfect I think I can do that and a little more...Permission to go to engineering Sir?"

Hunter smiled in concession. "Ok Atwood, go see how things look."

Silvio got settled into his new quarters. He paced the room frantically. He not only felt all alone but he was now cooped up. He decided that it might be time to visit the ships counselor. Silvio he was not sure how the counselor would respond after their first meeting in sick bay. His past experience with women who had rejected him told him that things would be tense. Silvio decided that he would be on his best behavior.

Leaving his quarters Silvio went to the office of the ships counselor. He rang the door chime and waited. The thought occurred to him that he had not made an appointment and that he might be interrupting someone else's session.

Ensign Zoei paused in her dictation of the session with Doctor Dane. She sensed trepidation from Lieutenant Silvio. If only this second meeting wasn't going to be during a session, she might have had a little fun with him after his showboating in Sick Bay. It was a good thing her next meeting with him was a session, anything like she would have planned would have been highly irregular.

Zoei straightened in her chair, placing her hands flat on the desktop. Standing slowly, she said, "Come in."

"Sorry for not making an appointment first. I was hoping that you might have a few moments to spare for me." said Silvio trying to keep everything as professional as possible.

"Of course, Lieutenant," Zoei replied. "My morning was going to be spent working on reports, so now will be fine to meet. I heard you had escaped Sick Bay. Are you ready to return to your engines?"

"Yes, I believe that I need to return to work. I am not one to sit around." Said Silvio.

"Have a seat over there," Zoei gestured toward the sitting area. "Would you like something to drink?"

"No, thank you, Counselor," said Silvio as he looked around the office. "You have a nice office."

"Computer, ice water, please," Zoei stated as she paused by the replicator. She picked up her glass and walked to the sitting area. Cradling the glass in both hands, she settled into her seat. "Thank you, I have to say when the Zion was built, they designed this area perfectly. I couldn't have found a better office if I had been part of the design team that put it together. Lieutenant, why do you think you are ready to return to work?" Zoei asked, shifting the focus of the conversation to the business at hand.

"Because, my body has healed enough that I can do the jobs required of me." replied Silvio. He wanted to ask her to call him Silvio but decided to tread carefully. "Besides, just being cooped up in my quarters is driving me crazy." Silvio paused and added, "Sorry counselor, perhaps I used a bad choice of words there."

Zoei smiled. "After reading your jacket, I would have been more concerned if you hadn't made at least one comment along those lines. Tell me how you feel about what you have been through lately."

Silvio was not sure if she was referring to the Cardassians or his time in sickbay. "I am very glad to be out of sickbay. There is always someone there." he thought about things a bit. "It is funny, while I was there all I wanted was some time alone. Now that I am out, I can't stand to be alone."

Looking at the counselor he added, "That sounded really strange didn't it?"

"It sounds perfectly reasonable. Most people like to be around other people, when they choose. While you were in Sick Bay, you couldn't choose to be alone. Going back a little further than Sick Bay, how do you feel about what you went through on the Kittyhawk?"

"I think I am lucky." Said Silvio.

"Luck, as long as it is good, is nice to have. Do you have any concerns about returning to your position?" Zoei asked. Silvio was a hard man to read. One didn't come through the types of torture he had with no psychological scars, it was impossible. So far, though, there wasn't any appearance of trouble with him.

"No, I have no concerns. Other than keeping our warp systems together long enough to get us to Qul Tuq." Said Silvio. He looked at the doctor. "You look somewhat astonished counselor. Did you expect me to fall to pieces?" Silvio paused "The truth be told I have already done that, counselor. As soon as I got to my quarters I broke down. All of the people on that death shuttle were my friends. They are gone but, it will do their memory no good if I stop living, too. I will not dishonor their memory." Silvio paused and looked into the Counselor's beautiful eyes. "Perhaps you want to know about my experience with the cardassians? Do you want to know how I survived it? Do you want to know why I did not die in sickbay?" Silvio tried desperately to cling to his professionalism.

Zoie learned forward, hands clasped, forearms resting on her knees. "Yes, Lieutenant, I would like to know."

Silvio took a deep breath and focused his attantion on her eyes and began. "Cardassians are such hateful beings. Did you know that during the time that they interrogated me the only question they asked me was 'What is your name Human," said Silvio imitating his cardassian captor. "I answered them, heck my name and rank is not secret information, and for that I was rewarded with a blow to the face." Silvio touched the side of his face, remembering. "That was the only time they asked me a question. They just beat me and tortured me for their pleasure. They are hateful creatures. After a while the pain did not bother me anymore. I was able to force my mind to focus on other things. I am certain that I designed, in my head, a complete slipstream propulsion system." Silvio smiled, "I wish I could remember the details of that now."

"Minds play funny tricks sometimes, don't they?" Zoei smiled. "What will you do the next time you see a Cardassian?"

"I suppose the answer to that question would depend on if the Cardassian intends to do me harm,"Silvio replied. "I cannot say that I will go out of my way to befriend a Cardassian."

"That is understandable." Zoei shifted in her chair, slightly straightening her spine. "Do you have anything you wish to discuss with me?"

"Well, now that you mention it," Silvio began, "I would like to apologize for being so forward with you when you came to visit me in sickbay." Silvio was shocked. He could not remember a time when he had appoligized for putting what his classmates at the academy referred to as the "Silvio Slide" on a woman. Silvio wondered what was wrong with him but decided that now was not the time to bring it up.

"Apology accepted, Lieutenant. If there is nothing else, I will get the report authorizing your return to duty off to Commander Wright. I am sure he will be happy to see you are ready to head back to the engine room."

"Thank you Counselor." Silvio smiled at her and then left her office. He was eager to get back to work.

Counselor’s office

Carrying her water glass back to the replicator, Zoei shook her head. It has been a far busier day than she had anticipated when she got out of bed this morning. After two unscheduled appointments, she felt a vast amount of relief that today had been originally dedicated to paperwork only. At this rate, she was afraid to hear the door chime again. The good news was, at least the crew was beginning to trust her. If this wasn’t starting, neither of her two visitors would have appeared this morning. Zoei reached to put her glass on the replicator. It slipped from her hands, shattering on the tile flooring. Shards of glass glinted in the light, sparkling a million tiny rainbows around the counselor, and the sound reverberated in her ears. Zoei shook her head again, this time in disgust at her clumsiness. Once upon a time, her mother had talked of Patia’s Dropsies on a daily basis. Thankfully, minor accidents like this hadn’t happened in quite some time.

Zoei strode to the closet area behind her desk, grabbing a small dustpan and whisk broom. She squatted on her haunches, sweeping the glittering glass into the pan. Stretching slowly to her feet, Zoei emptied the dustpan into the receptacle below the replicator. She returned the dustpan and broom to the closet and gently closed the door. Zoei returned to her desk, ready to resume her report on the doctor’s visit from before.

“Computer, resume report Doctor Teilani Dane, Stardate 58203.02 1115.

After two consultations with Doctor Teilani Dane, the following findings were determined:

The doctor has survived a severe emotional trauma.

Although the doctor is willing to discuss the facts of the trauma, she is reluctant to discuss any emotional aspects of her experience

The doctor is suffering recurrent nightmares, increasing in intensity.

The doctor is having a minor personality conflict with one of the medics assigned to sick bay.

Recommendations:

The doctor is encouraged to continue individual counseling sessions as well as attending group sessions with other survivors to increase her willingness to discuss the emotional aspects of her traumas. During subsequent sessions, the doctor will be encouraged to keep a dream log of the nightmares, as she experiences. The doctor will be setting up a meeting with the medic to review the problems they are having. If this meeting is not successful, the doctor will request assistance from the counselor in setting up a mediation meeting to work through any and all underlying issues.

“Computer, end report. Save report, one copy to Doctor Teilani Dane’s personnel file and one copy to Commander Wright.”

Zoei stood, reaching her arms up over her head. She stretched her hands to the ceiling, her back making a satisfying popping sound as she extended up on her tip toes. One report down, one to go and she could take a late lunch. She had been hungry for the broccoli cheese soup she had eaten at Miranda’s the last time. Today would be a good day to head over there for lunch.

Zoei glanced at her chronometer. She needed to get busy or she wouldn’t be done in time to eat lunch during Miranda’s regular lunch hours. She walked to the replicator. “Raspberry Iced Tea with two fresh raspberries.” The glass materialized and she reached for it. The scent of raspberries made her stomach growl. She turned back to her desk, her stride lengthening; she was ready to finish up the last report.

Zoei slid her chair back from her desk and settled into it. Tucking her feet up on to the caster base, she grabbed hold of the desk and pulled herself rapidly to her work area. The rush of the short ride brought a smile to her face.

“Computer, begin report Lieutenant Junior Grade Giuseppe Silvio, Stardate 58203.02 1205

After consultation with Lieutenant Junior Grade Giuseppe Silvio, the following findings were determined:

Lieutenant Silvio has survived extensive torture at the hands of the Cardissians.

Lieutenant Silvio has a realistic attitude about the fate of his fellow comrades

Lieutenant Silvio has been released from Sick Bay with no medical restrictions.

Lieutenant Silvio is willing to discuss his experiences, both from a factual as well as an emotional standpoint.

Recommendations:

Lieutenant Silvio is encouraged to attend group counseling sessions with other survivors of the Kittyhawk. Although he is doing well at this time, as he progresses, he may find he needs support. It will be best for him to have a steady base of support already in place. Lieutenant Silvio is released to return to full active duty effective immediately.

==Sickbay==

After Riaan’s shift she decided to head to sick bay to see if Teilani Dane was interested in joining her for dinner.

As she entered sickbay she looked around and saw the doctor hunched over her desk doing reports. Riaan headed over and said. Excuse me doctor is this a good time?

Not really, Teilani replied, but what can I do for you?

I was wondering are you interested in joining me in the mess hall for dinner now my shift is over?

Teilani hesitated, well actually I must finish these reports, on the other hand I have skipped breakfast and lunch all together and it is getting hard to ignore the rumbling in my stomach, so yes I would love to join you for dinner.

Teilani quickly dumped the reports in a drawer, she could finish them tonight, left some instructions for the next shift and both she and Riaan walked out the door on their way to the mess hall.

As they were walking Teilani tried to make some conversation, tell me Riaan, how did you end up on the Zion?

After I left my home planet I joined a ship whereby I could hone my skills as a fighter. I spent five years aboard the Panther. The crew where fantastic over the years those that did survive that is. One learned not to get to close to anyone or become attached not knowing the unknown. I had learned to control my emotions and not let them interfere with my life or career while serving onboard the Panther. I literally turned all my emotions off and learned to become extremely cold. I have many scars as you may have read in my medical report and I was one of the fortunate ones to come back alive from whatever assignment that was given to me. Even the doctor on the ship was surprised and joked about me having someone watching over me.

Aren’t you a bit hard for yourself Teilani responded.

Riaan nodded, maybe anyways I wanted more then what my parents wanted me to be on Rutian IV, I wasn’t interested being a doctor nor a scientist like my parents so I needed to find myself and learning how to fight was the only thing I was able to think of even though my parents would hate me for that. A friend on my planet taught me how and knew the Captain of Panther was always looking for new recruits and that was were I really learned how to be a good fighter. Anyway after five years as a mercenary I needed a change and I had heard the Maquis Alliance were looking for new recruits so I decided it was time for a change maybe this time I might make my parents proud before it was to late and here I am and I would have a better chance on survival.

==Mess Hall==

A few seconds later Teilani and Riaan arrived at the mess hall. They entered and proceeded directly to the replicator. Riaan replied, after you Teilani?

Teilani placed her order, steamed chicken breast, broccoli, mashed potatoes with a dash of nutmeg, a glass of ice water and aldebaran spice pudding, one of her favourites.

After Teilani got what she wanted Riaan walked up to the replicator and ordered a steak, baked potato with sour cream and chives, peas, coffee and for dessert bumble bee pie.

Riaan looked around and spotted an empty table and Teilani and Riaan head over to the table and settle down getting to know one another better.

What about you how did you end up on the Zion, if you don’t mind me asking?

That is a silly question Riaan, Teilani giggled, as you know I am one of the survivors of the Kittyhawk. Of course, Riaan replied, how stupid can I be. Teilani continued, but if you mean how I ended up as a doctor, well actually pure circumstantial.

Actually I started off as a class 1 shuttle pilot, but it turned out that I have a problem with small spaces, being cooped up in a shuttle for hours. I even asked my teachers if it was not possible to improve the inside of a shuttle. Anyway I had to find some thing else, so I took up the medical side. I was offered the position as a teacher at the medical academy but I declined, Teilani continued. Being in deep space is much more exciting.

Have you ever tried this aldebaran spice pudding, delicious, Teilani said. Here have a try, as she pushed the saucer to Riaan’s side of the table.
