“Closed because of remodelling”

Commander Wright entered sickbay. It was full. Wright sadly shook his head at the sight of all the people who were injured. It was in his opinion an expensive price to pay for this war. Wright looked around and noticed that the doctor was busy with a patient. He decided that he would wait and headed towards her office when one of the patients caught his attention. It was Miranda.

Wright approached her bed. She appeared to be sleeping. Quietly he picked up the PADD that had her record and glanced though it. She had some pretty severe plasma burns, a concussion, and a broken leg. The doctor's notes said she had regained consciousness. Wright was relieved at that.

"It says that I am going to live," said Miranda with her eyes still closed.

Wright returned the PADD back to where he found it and smiled, "Indeed it does. It looks like you have had a heck of a time."

"Yeah," she said wearily, "The doctor has fixed me up for the most part, but I wish she could do something for this terrible headache." Miranda grimaced as her head throbbed painfully.

"Have you discussed it with her," asked Wright.

Miranda shook her head, "Not yet, the last time I spoke to her it was not a problem."

"Well, I have no doubt that you will get the best treatment here," said Wright. "You have someone taking care of the lounge?"

Miranda smiled, "It is being cleaned up even as week speak. It should be open tonight, without me of course." Miranda rubbed her temples trying to clear her head.

"Hello Commander, Miranda." Teilani said softly, holding a tricorder in her hand.

"Hello Doctor," said Wright, "I came down to visit with you and found Miranda here."

Teilani smiled. "Yes she was injured during a blow up but she will recover completely." Teilani said.

"She says she has a-," Wright began but was interrupted by a yell from Miranda. Looking away from the doctor Wright saw Miranda sitting up in her bed holding her head in both hands. It was clear that she was in a great deal of pain.

"Excuse me Commander," Teilani said quickly. She pressed some controls and ran her hand scanner along Miranda's head. "Gloria," give me a neurosynaptic emitter.

"Miranda, Miranda." Teilani said. "Look at me, try to open your eyes."

Wright got out of the way of the medical staff. Even though every fiber of his being wanted to rush in and help, he knew that it was no longer his place to do so. He watched as Miranda cradled her head in both hands and rocked back and forth in agony. She did not seem able to respond to or even to have heard the doctor's question.

"Gloria help me put ting her under." Teilani prepared a hypospray with sedation and pressed it against Miranda's neck. Slowly Miranda slumped back on the bed, her face distorted from pain.

Teilani looked at the diagnostic display at the top of Miranda's head. Elevated blood pressure, synaptic signals off the scale.

Calmly but with a steady pace Teilani prepared some hyposprays with triox, as well as a blood thinner. "Gloria give me the coagulation activator," she asked.

For some reason the little medical device weight heavy in her hands and Teilani could feel Wright’s eyes in the back of her neck. "Monitor her platelets, they seem to be clotted at the left temple, it’s not big, but we need to make sure."

"Yes doctor," Gloria said calmly as she handed Teilani the equipment. "The clot is reducing doctor, 78%......69%...........52%. Gloria administered a little more blood thinner. 37%."

Teilani carefully moved the activator over the left hand side of Miranda's head. "Heart rate 90, doctor." Teilani nodded.

Wright watched the doctor and her staff work. He was impressed by the way they worked together. He watched as the readings on the display began to change in Miranda's favour. Wright remembered the rush he used to get when saving someone's life; he wondered if perhaps he had made the wrong decision when he decided to go into command. He really did miss the work.

"How much now, keep giving me the readings Gloria." Teilani mumbled. 29%.......17%.......12%.......7%....I think we are there doctor." Gloria said.

Teilani looked up and took her tricorder from her pocket. "I think so too. Let’s see if Miranda wants to wake up."

Miranda's eyes opened for just a brief moment. She took a breath and fell back to sleep.

Teilani smiled and brushed the hair from Miranda's face. It was peaceful now the lines of pain which were there earlier had disappeared. She turned back to Wright.

"She is sleeping now Commander." Teilani said trying to hide a yawn with a smile. She will be back in the lounge tomorrow.

"Good work Doctor," said Wright. "How are things holding up here?"

"Pretty well," Teilani responded. "All things considered."

"Do you have any casualty reports," asked Wright.

Teilani nodded and walked over to her office. It was a bit messy, some old mugs with cold coffee were on her desk. The couch showed signs of having been slept on. She took some PADDs from her desk and handed him to Wright.

"I believe you needed these? There were some casualties and I have taken the liberty of finding out about the relatives and such.”

Wright nodded as he took the PADDs. Family members of those who have died would need to be contacted. It was one of the jobs that no one relished doing.

“Thank you. Keep up the good work Doctor,” said Wright. He paused to look at the couch. “You should try to get some rest,” “he suggested, “You look pretty exhausted.”

“All in good time Sir,” Teilani responded. With the number of wounded she refused to lie down, once the majority was cured and released she would take some time off.

“Have a good afternoon doctor,” said Wright.

Teilani smiled " You too Sir." She tilted her head a little as she saw Wright leave. She wondered when the last time was he ever truly smiled. Judging from his posture it looked like he carried the whole world upon his shoulders.
