Major MacAlister knew that once she'd tossed the gauntlet down, it would be a race to see who got to sickbay first. So she wasn't in the least surprised when she arrived at *precisely* 08:00 to find her XO waiting outside along with Taylor, Singer, and Beckett.
The Major took one look at the group as they stopped lounging against the bulkhead and assumed a more upright and professional bearing. All except for Captain Campanili who was, as usual, standing at parade rest with his hands clasped behind his back, indulgently watching the antics of the others and listening to their good-natured banter.
"Which one of ye won? And what was th' bet?" Mac asked as she quirked a brow at them.
"The boss won," said Beckett. "Singer and me, we had a bet to see who could score a date with that pretty little girl who runs the ship's lounge."
"Yeah," replied Singer, "Boss said we were both out of our league and shouldn't waste the poor girl's time."
"He was right too," said Beckett, "We both crashed and burned."
"Beck here," said Singer giving Beckett a nudge in the ribs with his elbow, "thought he was closest and tried to claim the wager, but Boss said we were both losers and kept our credits."
"Hey! I got her name at least," protested Beckett.
"Umm. . . I hate to tell you this Beck, but the name of the lounge was Miranda's. It don't take no warp core specialist to figure that out."
"Oh," said Beckett.
MacAlister exchanged an amused look with Captain Campanili, who's lips =almost= quirked in a smile, but the man managed to keep his rather placid look of quiet observation. However, those who knew him could see the laughter that danced in the depths of his eyes.
Taylor adjusted the ever present wrap around sun glasses covering his eyes and shook his head in disbelief. "Let's cut the chit chat and get this over with you meat heads. I have a breakfast date at ten hundred hours."
Beckett, and Singer exchanged startled glances, "A date?" they said almost in unison.
"Move it Marines," barked Taylor, with a big smile on his face, and everyone headed into sickbay.
"Probably with th' illusive Miranda," the Major observed with a smile as she followed the group inside.
Chords and Beck exchanged glances and both looked at Taylor almost expectantly.
Taylor ignored the stares of his men and strode toward the sickbay door. A smile spread across his face as he went.
To a man, and woman, they all tugged their caps off when they entered Sickbay.
While Chords and Beck checked out the nurses and Campanili stood at parade rest near the entrance with Taylor, Madge knocked on the Chief Medical Officer's door.
"Lieu-ten-ant?" she queried in her soft Scottish brogue, Nordic blue eyes smiling as warmly at the doctor as the corners of her lips. Her long red hair was coiled in a tight braided and secured to the back of her head. A few errant wisps had escaped its confines, adding a surprising and unexpected softness to the Major's appearance.
Looking up from the information Teilani was reading, she turned her head towards the door.
"Major? How may I help you?" she asked, getting up and walking towards the group of Marines.
Major MacAlister backed out of the office doorway to give the doctor room. "T'lads and I are here tae check in," the Marine CO offered her own records first. "MacAlister," she added.
"This is my XO, Captain Campanili," she indicated the rather tall, dark looking Italian standing near the sickbay door. He nodded politely and handed over his records. "Ma'am."
"My Tertiary, Lieu-ten-ant Taylor" she motioned to Scott.
"Ma'am," said Taylor.
"Chief Warrant Singer," she motioned to Peter, who gave a nod of acknowledgement along with his records and a murmured, "Ma'am."
"And Warrant Officer Beckett," Madge indicated Al, who grinned at Dane and gave her a half bow as he offered up the PADD with his records. "Morning, Doctor."
Teilani smiled as she accepted the various PADDs with the Marine's medical history on it. "Good morning Mr. Beckett," she replied to the Warrant Officer.
She turned towards her medical Staff, "Gloria, can you take care of those two Marines please", Teilani gestured at Singer and Beckett, "examination room 2 is empty."
"Of course doctor," Gloria responded. "Follow me men."
"Affirmative, ma'am," Singer and Beckett answered in unison as they drew to their full heights and dutifully followed Gloria into the exam room.
"Major, this way please. If the others would be so kind to wait for a moment?"
"Of course, doctor," Campanili nodded and maintained his position at the entrance to Sickbay. He almost looked like he was standing guard.... On the other hand, perhaps he was protecting their escape route.
Taylor walked past Beck and Chords to stand next to Campanili. He causally leaned against the wall and waited.
MacAlister followed behind the good doctor and scanned the layout of Sickbay before she stepped into the exam area.
"Anything in particular I need to know?" Teilani asked as she closed the examination curtain.
"Nae a thing, doctor. I'm fit as a fiddle," Madge smiled pleasantly at the other woman and perched up on the exam table.
"Ok, lets see then." Teilani said pulling her tricorder from her pocket. Slowly she moved the scanner along the woman's body. "Blood pressure, heart.. longs.." Teilani mumbled.
"I do have all th' parts." Major MacAlister's lips quirked in an amused grin as she watched the doctor work and listened to her mumblings.
Teilani closed her tricorder. "You are indeed fit as a fiddle Major."
Teilani turned towards a medical console and started to download the Major's medical file and her own tricorder readings. "You can sent in the next of your men, Major." she said towards Madge.
"Of course. And thank ye, doctor." Madge grinned at the other woman as she hopped off the biobed and stepped towards the curtain.
"Painless," she announced to Campanili and Taylor when she exited the examination area.
"They always are." Just one corner of Campanili's lips quirked in an almost grin. "Rank has its privileges, Lieutenant," he quirked a brow towards Taylor and finally did smile as he stepped forward, cutting Taylor off and winking at MacAlister in the process.
Mac had to chuckle as Campanili stepped behind the curtain. She turned to grin at Taylor. "Ye'd think he was in a hurry..." the Major commented as she took up the position Campi had been in. "Or tryin' tae make ye late, laddie," she deadpanned.
"Maybe Sir," replied Taylor with a smile.
"Please sit down," Teilani said as the next Marine came in. "Your name is?" she asked.
"Marcus Campanili, ma'am," the Captain announced as he settled onto the exam table.
"Any medical problems I should be aware off?" she asked again, taking out her tricorder.
"No, ma'am. Just some old injuries that have healed up long ago."
As with the Major, Teilani worked quietly around the Marine. Every now and then adjusting some readings on her tricorder. "There your done, now it didn't hurt did it?"
"Not a bit, ma'am. It never does," Campanili smiled at her. "You were exceedingly gentle," he added.
"That is my second nature Captain," Teilani answered with a smile. She closed her tricorder and tucked her hands in her pocket. "If you would be so kind to sent the next one in please."
"Of course, ma'am." Campanili stood. "It would be my pleasure," he assured her, giving her a slight nod and another small smile before leaving the curtained area.
"Painless," the Captain agreed with the Major's assessment as he moved to where Taylor was standing. "You're up, Lieutenant." He waved his hand with an 'after you' motion and then took up the man's position by the door, standing at parade rest rather than leaning against the bulkhead.
With the tip of his right index finger, Taylor pushed his sunglasses back onto his face; turning without uttering a single word he stepped towards the examination area.
"Have the other two made it out yet?" Campi motioned his head slightly towards exam room two where Chords and Beck had disappeared to with the nurse.
"Nae yet," Mac shook her head. "I'm waiting for the lass tae come stormin' out heaping curses on their heads."
"More than likely she'd toss them out on their ear if I'm any judge of character." Just one corner of Campanili's lips quirked in a shadow of the suppressed amusement that lingered in the depths of his eyes.
"Aye, there's always that," the Major agreed. "Although ye think they would learn their lesson and nae be harassing the medical lasses."
"A very logical assumption, Major," he nodded and a full grin split his features, seen only by the Major and Taylor just before he disappeared behind the examination curtain.
Taylor entered the exam room and stood in from of the doctor. "Lieutenant Scott Taylor reporting as requested," he said handing a PADD with his medical records over to Dane.
"Thank you Lieutenant, at ease," Teilani said browsing through his PADD. Interesting injuries, she thought to herself.
"Mmmm."
"Something interesting?"
"Oh no, nothing serious, I am just curious about some of your old injuries, you must have seen a lot of battle judging from them." Teilani spoke as she took out her tricorder."
"It is the nature of being a Marine Doctor. We get hurt doing what we do."
Working swiftly Teilani had to force her self not to hum as she examined Lieutenant Taylor. "There you go Lieutenant," she spoke closing her tricorder. "Your fit as a fiddle too."
"Thank you Doctor."
Having examined the last of them, Teilani stepped out of the examination room and Gloria did the same. "Their all in good shape Doctor," she said handing Teilani their respective PADDs.
"Thanks Gloria," Teilani said with a smile and watched the nurse walk away.
"Well there you have it Major," she said turning to Mac. "You are all Fit and free to go."
"Thank ye, doctor," Madge smiled at the other woman. "'Tis been a pleasure tae meet ye," she glanced over as Beck and Chords headed towards the door. "The lads and I like tae be on good terms with th' medical staff."
"That's an understatement, Voice," Chords chuckled.
"Just not =too= good of terms," Beck added with a lingering, almost wishful glance at one of the cute nurses.
Teilani grinned as she noticed Beck's gaze. Perhaps she should warn her female staff about wondering Marines but then again a little excitement would not harm anybody.
"Stow it, Marine," Chords reached over and gently rapped him on the shoulder.
Taylor who had been standing in the entrance to the exam room looked at the group of Marines. "I don't know about you all but I have plans. Let's roll outta here."
There was a subtle shift in the Major's bearing as she supported Taylor's suggestion. Her body language spoke volumes to her men. Captain Campanili slipped out of parade rest and came almost to attention although fell just shy of it. There was a nearly indiscernible twitch of his head, acknowledging the Major's shift in presence and at the same time let Taylor know that indeed, it was time for them to move out.
Beck and Chords became all business as they followed Taylor's lead and supportive backing of the CO and XO. "Sir..." Their words echoed each other as they addressed Dane in a respectful, -we are leaving now- manner.
It was a well-oiled unit that readjusted caps onto their heads and exited sickbay, slipping out swiftly and much more quietly than they'd stormed in. To a man, they each in turn acknowledged the doctor's rank and seniority before they left. The Major brought up the rear, pausing at the door to give Dane a broad smile and an added, "We'll let ye and yer lasses get back tae business now, Doctor," before she too slipped smartly from Sickbay.
Teilani smiled and nodded.
"Briefing at thirteen hundred hours, PT training at fourteen hundred," she could be heard barking the command to her men as she left.
"The Gauntlet," Chords could be heard saying almost gleefully before the door to Sickbay closed and the Marines were gone.
